There is no single number of lights that works for every trade show booth.
The correct quantity depends on booth size, display height, fixture output, beam coverage, and how much of the booth needs focused illumination.
However, a simple planning method can help exhibitors estimate the starting point.
10×10 Booth
A small 10×10 inline booth commonly starts with several strategically positioned fixtures rather than one high-output lamp.
The exact number depends on whether you are lighting:
- One back wall
- Product shelving
- A counter
- Multiple display panels
For a simple back-wall display, fewer fixtures may be sufficient. For a product-heavy booth, additional fixtures may be needed.
10×20 Booth
A 10×20 booth usually has more display area and therefore requires more distributed illumination.
Instead of concentrating fixtures in one section, spread them across the display surfaces. This helps avoid obvious bright and dark zones.
20×20 Island Booth
Island booths typically have displays on multiple sides. The lighting strategy therefore changes from “light the back wall” to creating consistent illumination around the full visitor experience.
Multiple fixtures distributed around the perimeter are usually more effective than a few extremely powerful lights.
Don’t Calculate Only by Wattage
A common mistake is: “This light is 50W, so I need fewer lights.”
Wattage tells you how much electrical power the fixture consumes. It does not completely describe how effectively that light illuminates your display.
Also consider:
- Lumens
- Beam angle
- Fixture position
- Mounting height
- Display distance
- Light distribution
The Better Question
Instead of asking: How many lights do I need?
Ask: How much display area does each fixture need to cover?
That produces a much more useful lighting plan.
