Choosing an LED module for a lightbox starts with one question: where will the light source be installed? A module mounted around the frame perimeter needs a directional optic that throws light across the graphic. A module mounted behind the graphic needs a wide distribution that spreads light forward. Mixing those two structures is one of the most common causes of dark centers, bright bands and visible LED dots.

What is an LED lightbox module?
An LED lightbox module is a purpose-built light source used inside an illuminated display. Unlike a general flexible LED strip, a professional lightbox module may combine a rigid aluminum body, optical lens, plug-in connector and mounting points designed for repeatable production.
In the broadest engineering sense, both edge-lit and direct-lit products belong to a backlighting system because they illuminate a graphic or translucent panel. For product selection, however, the two structures should be treated separately:
- Edge-lit or side-lit: the modules are installed along the frame perimeter and project light inward across the display.
- Backlit or direct-lit: the modules are installed behind the graphic and project light forward toward the viewing surface.
The words may sound similar, but the installation direction and optical requirements are different.
Edge-lit LED modules: light travels across the graphic
An edge-lit LED module or rigid LED light bar is mounted along one or more sides of the aluminum frame. The lens redirects the LED output so it travels across the face rather than shining directly forward.
These modules commonly use an asymmetric, dual-angle optical specification such as:
- 15° × 60°
- 20° × 60°
- 9° × 50°
- 10° × 40°
The two numbers describe the spread in two perpendicular planes. One plane controls how far the light travels across the box; the other controls how widely it spreads along the graphic. That controlled distribution is why a dual-angle lens is a strong indicator of a side-lighting product.
Where edge lighting works well
- SEG fabric lightboxes
- Trade show booth walls and illuminated backdrops
- Single- or double-sided aluminum frames
- Modular exhibition systems
- Frames where the center needs to remain clear
- Long graphics that require controlled cross-lighting
Compact modules and short rigid bars are useful in smaller frames or narrow installation spaces. Standard-length 10W bars cover common commercial lightboxes. Higher-output 12W, 18W and 20W systems are available for larger graphics, longer optical throws or projects requiring greater brightness.
Backlit LED modules: light travels toward the graphic
A backlit LED module is mounted on the rear panel, channel or internal support behind the graphic. Instead of throwing light sideways, it spreads light forward across the face material.
Direct-backlight products often use a single wide-angle optic, such as approximately 170°. The wide beam allows adjacent modules to overlap, helping reduce bright points when the module spacing and cabinet depth are correctly matched.
Where direct backlighting works well
- Shallow and medium-depth sign boxes
- Backlit acrylic and translucent panels
- Graphic faces where modules can be distributed behind the image
- Stone, decorative surfaces and specialty backlighting
- Large faces that benefit from a repeatable LED grid
A bar can be physically rigid and still be backlit. The deciding factor is not the product shape: it is the installation direction and optical distribution.
How to read a lightbox lens angle
Lens angle should be considered together with cabinet geometry. A narrow distribution can carry light farther, but it can also create bright bands if the beams do not overlap correctly. A wider distribution can improve coverage in a shorter span, but may lose useful intensity over a long distance.

This is a practical selection rule, not a substitute for the installation drawing. Always confirm where the module is mounted and which direction the lens faces.
Five factors that determine the correct LED module
1. Useful brightness
Wattage is electrical input, not the amount of useful light reaching the graphic. Compare module lumens, optical distribution, fixture efficiency and the amount of light delivered per square metre of graphic. A higher-wattage product is helpful only when its output is directed where it is needed.
There is no single lux target for every lightbox. Indoor exhibitions, retail displays, airport signage and outdoor advertising operate under different ambient light and regulatory conditions.
2. Uniformity
A good lightbox should not show obvious LED dots, yellow patches, dark centers or bright bands. Uniformity depends on the complete system:
- lens distribution
- module output
- module spacing
- distance from the module to the graphic
- two-side versus four-side installation
- internal reflectance
- graphic transmission

3. Graphic color and light consistency
Color temperature describes whether the light appears warm, neutral or cool; it does not by itself describe color accuracy. For brand-sensitive graphics, check CRI, LED binning and color consistency between modules. A well-matched CRI90 system can reproduce printed graphics more naturally than a poorly matched system with a higher color temperature.
4. Installation, electrical safety and serviceability
For professional exhibition and signage production, check:
- DC input voltage
- connector type and polarity protection
- maximum recommended linked quantity
- driver capacity with suitable headroom
- UL or ETL listing where required
- heat dissipation and ventilation
- ability to replace a single module without rebuilding the system
Plug-in modules reduce assembly time and are particularly useful for rental exhibits that are installed, dismantled and serviced repeatedly.
5. Total installed cost
The lowest-priced module is not always the lowest-cost system. Include the number of modules, power supplies, wiring labor, mounting hardware, installation time and expected maintenance. A higher-output bar may reduce the number of fixtures, while a compact modular system may make replacement and inventory management easier.

Do two similar 10W edge-lit bars need separate applications?
Not necessarily. Two rigid bars with the same power and physical format can often use interchangeable optical lenses. They can be treated as one general product family, with the final lens selected according to the lightbox geometry rather than forcing each bar into a completely separate market category.
For the buyer, the important comparison is not the internal model number. It is:
- bar dimensions
- light output
- available lens distributions
- CRI and color temperature
- connector and maximum linked quantity
- certification
Information to prepare before requesting a layout
To recommend an LED module quantity and power supply, we need:

Short answer
Use a dual-angle asymmetric lens for most perimeter-mounted edge-lighting systems, and use a single wide-angle optic for modules installed behind the graphic. Then select output, spacing and power according to the actual lightbox dimensions. Do not choose an LED module by wattage or lumen output alone.
