CRI for Food Display

CRI is arguably more important for food than for any other product category. The difference between CRI 80 and CRI 90 is clearly visible in food color rendering:

  • Under CRI 80 light, red strawberries can appear orange-red. Green herbs can look slightly yellow. The overall effect is that food looks less fresh.
  • Under CRI 90+ light, colors appear as they do in natural daylight. Strawberries look red. Herbs look green. The food looks fresh and appetizing.

Minimum CRI 90 for all food and beverage displays. CRI 95 is worth considering for premium food brands where visual presentation is a core part of the brand proposition.

Display Case Lighting for Food

Many food exhibitors use display cases, refrigerated units, or open risers to present their products. Lighting inside or above these displays requires different considerations than backwall graphic lighting:

  • Avoid heat-generating lights inside refrigerated cases — LED lights produce minimal heat and are safe for use in and around refrigerated displays. Halogen lights are not suitable.
  • Use focused beam angles for case lighting — 30–45° beam angle concentrates light on the products inside the case rather than spilling onto the case frame.
  • Position lights to avoid direct reflection off packaging — Glossy food packaging reflects light directly into visitors' eyes if the light angle is wrong. Position lights at 30–45° from vertical to minimize reflection.

Photography and Video at Food Booths

Food trade shows attract significant media coverage, and buyers often photograph products for internal review. Flicker-free lighting is essential — banding in food photography makes products look unappetizing regardless of how good the food actually is.

If you plan to do any product photography at the show, test your lighting setup before the event. Point a smartphone camera at your display in slow-motion mode. If you see banding, replace the lights before the show.
