How to Light a Shelf Display at a Trade Show: LED Strip vs. Arm Light

How to Light a Shelf Display at a Trade Show: LED Strip vs. Arm Light

Shelf displays are one of the most common booth configurations at trade shows — and one of the most commonly under-lit. Products sitting on shelves in a dim booth get overlooked. The right lighting makes shelves look like a retail store; the wrong lighting makes them look like a storage rack.

This guide covers the two main options for lighting shelf displays at trade shows — LED strips and arm lights — and when to use each one.

The Two Main Options: LED Strips vs. Arm Lights

LED Strips

LED strips (also called LED tape or ribbon lights) are flexible strips of LEDs that mount directly to the shelf edge or underside. They provide even, continuous illumination along the full length of the shelf.

Advantages:

  • Even illumination across the entire shelf surface
  • Low profile — nearly invisible when installed
  • Can be cut to any length
  • Good for backlit or edge-lit effects

Disadvantages:

  • Lower lumen output per meter than arm lights
  • Require a driver/power supply (adds complexity)
  • Not adjustable — fixed position once installed
  • Less effective for tall products that need top-down lighting

Arm Lights

LED arm lights mount to the top rail or overhead structure and shine downward onto the shelves. They provide directional, high-lumen illumination that can be aimed precisely.

Advantages:

  • High lumen output — much brighter than LED strips
  • Adjustable arm allows precise aiming at specific shelves or products
  • Works for tall products that need top-down lighting
  • Easy to reposition between shows

Disadvantages:

  • Creates shadows between shelves if not positioned correctly
  • Requires top rail or overhead mounting point
  • More visible than LED strips

When to Use LED Strips for Shelf Displays

LED strips are the better choice when:

  • You have multiple shelves and want each shelf individually lit from below
  • Products are flat or low-profile (cosmetics, small electronics, packaged goods)
  • You want a clean, retail-style look with minimal visible fixtures
  • You're lighting a display case or enclosed shelf unit

Mount LED strips to the underside of each shelf, facing downward. Use warm white (3000K) for consumer products, neutral white (4000K) for tech or medical products.

When to Use Arm Lights for Shelf Displays

Arm lights are the better choice when:

  • Products are tall and need top-down lighting (bottles, trophies, equipment)
  • You have a standard panel display with 1–2 shelves
  • You need high lumen output to compete with venue ambient lighting
  • You want flexibility to adjust lighting between shows

Our LED arm lights are ideal for shelf displays in standard 10×10 and 10×20 booths. Position the arm at the front edge of the top rail and angle it 30°45° downward to illuminate the shelf face and products.

The Best Approach: Combine Both

For high-end shelf displays, combining LED strips and arm lights gives the best result:

  • Arm lights provide the primary high-lumen illumination from above
  • LED strips under each shelf eliminate shadows and add a premium retail look

This combination is commonly used in jewelry, cosmetics, and luxury product displays where presentation quality directly affects sales.

Practical Setup Guide for a Shelf Display

Standard 10×10 Booth with 3 Shelves

  1. Mount 2–3 arm lights to the top rail, spaced evenly
  2. Angle arm lights at 30°–45° downward toward the display
  3. Add LED strips to the underside of each shelf if budget allows
  4. Use 3000K–4000K color temperature throughout for consistency
  5. Test the setup before the show to identify any shadow zones

Display Case or Enclosed Shelf Unit

  1. Use LED strips on the underside of each shelf
  2. Add a small arm light or spotlight above the case for top-down accent
  3. Use 3000K for warm products (jewelry, food), 4000K for tech or medical

FAQ

What is the best lighting for a trade show shelf display?

For most shelf displays, a combination of LED arm lights (for primary illumination) and LED strips under each shelf (to eliminate shadows) gives the best result. For simple setups, 2–3 arm lights positioned at the top rail provide sufficient illumination for a standard 10×10 shelf display.

Should I use LED strips or arm lights for trade show shelves?

Use LED strips when you want even, low-profile illumination across multiple shelves. Use arm lights when you need high lumen output, adjustability, or top-down lighting for tall products. Combining both gives the best result for premium displays.

How do I prevent shadows between shelves at a trade show?

Add LED strips to the underside of each shelf. This fills in the shadows created by overhead arm lights and gives each shelf its own light source. Alternatively, use multiple arm lights at different heights if your display structure allows it.

What color temperature should I use for a shelf display?

3000K–3500K for consumer products, fashion, food, and cosmetics. 4000K–5000K for tech, medical, and industrial products. Consistency across all light sources in the booth is important — mixing color temperatures looks unprofessional.

Can I use LED strips at a trade show without a separate power supply?

Most LED strips require a separate driver/power supply. Some come with an integrated driver and standard plug. Check the product specifications before purchasing. For trade show use, look for LED strips with a standard IEC or US plug to simplify power management.

How bright should shelf lighting be at a trade show?

For arm lights, aim for 2,000–3,000 lumens per fixture. For LED strips, 500–1,000 lumens per meter is sufficient for shelf illumination when combined with overhead arm lights. In high-ambient venues, err on the brighter side.

What's the difference between exhibit display light and a standard LED strip?

Exhibit display lights are specifically designed for trade show use — they're built for portability, quick setup, and durability across multiple shows. Standard LED strips are designed for permanent installation and may not be as easy to install and remove repeatedly without damage.
