IEC C13 Power Cords: A Compatibility Guide for Exhibitors

An IEC C13 power cord is an option for equipment with a compatible C14 inlet. It is not the correct cable for every exhibition light. Identify the inlet and check the complete cord set before buying a replacement.

Identify the two ends correctly

C13 is the female connector with three contact openings for line, neutral and protective earth. C14 is the mating inlet on the equipment. A wall-to-device cord has a regional mains plug at its other end. A cord described as C13-to-C14 is an interconnection cord with IEC connectors at both ends; it is not automatically a wall-plug cord.

Check ratings as well as physical fit

C13 is part of the IEC 60320 appliance-coupler family. For example, SCHURTER lists a C13 cord set at 10 A/250 V AC under IEC ratings. This does not establish the rating of every cord on the market. Check the exact cord, both connectors, conductor size and fixture requirements. The cable does not convert voltage or make a single-voltage light compatible with another supply.

Choose the mains plug for the actual outlet

Examples include NEMA 5-15P in North America, CEE 7/7 for suitable European outlets, BS 1363 in the UK and AS 3112 in Australia or New Zealand. Country labels alone are insufficient: confirm the approved distribution outlet, supply voltage, protective-earth connection and event requirements with the electrical contractor.

Choose length from the route

The linked BOOTH LIGHTS C13 cord is listed at 3 m with US, EU, UK and AU plug choices. That is a product length, not a universal booth recommendation. Measure the permitted cable route, allow for the fixture position and avoid tension, pinching or trip hazards.

Do not order by an informal name

“Kettle lead” is used inconsistently. C15 is a different connector intended for higher-temperature applications. Identify the inlet and follow the equipment manufacturer’s specified connector; do not substitute by appearance alone.

Inspect before the show and on site

  • Check the plug, insulation and connector for damage; remove damaged equipment from service.
  • Confirm that the required earth connection is retained throughout the installation.
  • Connect with the supply off and test the complete setup before packing.
  • Route the cord as approved by the venue and never lift a lamp by its cable.
  • Obtain model-specific approval documents where required; a connector name is not a certification.

For replacement selection, send the inlet photo, fixture model, destination and required cable route.
