How to Light a Trade Show Booth When the Venue Has No Overhead Power

Most exhibitors assume overhead power is a given. It isn't. Depending on the venue, the show, and your booth placement, you may find yourself with a single floor outlet, a power strip on the carpet, and no way to run cables up to a truss or overhead structure. This happens more often than the trade show industry likes to admit — at smaller regional shows, outdoor events, hotel ballrooms, and even some sections of major convention centers.

The good news: you don't need overhead power to light a booth well. You need the right lights and a clear plan for how to distribute power from the floor up.

Why Overhead Power Matters — And Why It's Often Unavailable

In a standard booth setup, lights are mounted at the top of the backwall or on a truss, and power runs down through the structure to a floor outlet. This keeps cables hidden and puts the light source at the right height to illuminate products below.

When overhead power isn't available, exhibitors typically face one of two situations: a single outlet at floor level, or a power drop somewhere in the booth footprint with no way to route cables vertically without them being visible. Neither is ideal, but both are workable.

The Core Problem: Getting Power to the Top of Your Display

If your lights mount at the top of a backwall or display frame, you need power up there. Without an overhead drop, that means running a cable from the floor outlet up the side or back of your structure. A few practical approaches:

  • Route cables inside the frame extrusion. Most aluminum display frames have hollow channels. A thin power cable can be threaded through the extrusion during setup, keeping it completely hidden. This requires planning before the show — you can't do it after the frame is assembled.
  • Use cable management clips along the back edge of the structure. Not invisible, but acceptable if the back of your booth faces a wall or another exhibitor's booth.
  • Mount lights lower than usual. If you can't get power to the top, consider mounting arm lights at mid-height on the frame sides rather than at the top. You lose some coverage angle, but it's better than no lighting at all.

Why Daisy-Chain Lights Are the Right Tool for This Situation

When you're working from a single floor outlet, the last thing you want is a separate power cable for each light. That means multiple cables running up your structure, multiple plugs competing for outlet space, and a setup that takes twice as long.

Three or four lights, one outlet, one cable run up the structure. The power distribution happens at the light level, not at the outlet.

Power Load: What You Can Actually Run from One Outlet

A standard US trade show outlet is typically 15A at 120V — that's 1800W of capacity, though most venues recommend staying under 80% load, so call it 1440W usable. Three 21W lights draw 63W total. Even six lights only pull 126W. You have plenty of headroom for the lights themselves.

Where exhibitors run into trouble is when they add other equipment — monitors, demo devices, charging stations — to the same circuit. Before the show, add up everything you're plugging in and make sure you're under the venue's stated limit. If you're close, request a second outlet when you submit your electrical order. It's usually a small additional cost and eliminates a real risk.

What to Bring When You Know Power Will Be Limited

A short packing list for shows where overhead power is uncertain:

  • A heavy-duty power strip with surge protection — not a cheap household strip. Trade show floors are electrically noisy environments.
  • Extra linking cables — if you're daisy-chaining lights, bring one more cable than you think you need.
  • Cable ties and adhesive clips — for routing cables cleanly up the back of your structure.
  • A copy of your electrical order confirmation — if there's a dispute about your outlet location or amperage, having the paperwork on-site resolves it faster.

A Note on Battery-Powered Lights

Battery-powered booth lights exist, and they're occasionally useful for very short demos or situations where no power is available at all. For a full-day trade show, they're not a practical solution. A standard show day runs eight to ten hours. No consumer battery light maintains consistent output for that duration, and the logistics of charging or swapping batteries between show days adds complexity you don't need.

If you have any outlet access at all — even a single floor outlet — wired lights with daisy-chain capability are the right choice.

The Setup That Works

For a 10×10 booth with a single floor outlet and no overhead power:
