Front-Lighting vs. Backlighting: The Fundamental Choice
The single most important lighting decision for a tile or surface booth is whether to front-light or backlight your display panels. These two approaches produce dramatically different results, and the right choice depends on your material type.
Front-lighting: arm lights aimed at the surface
Front-lighting with LED arm lights is the standard approach for opaque materials — ceramic tile, porcelain, most engineered stone, and brick. The light source is positioned above and in front of the display panel, angled to illuminate the surface from above. This technique works well for matte and textured surfaces where you want to emphasize relief, texture, and three-dimensional depth. A 30–45° angle creates raking light that makes surface texture pop.

Backlighting: light behind the material
Backlighting is the premium technique for translucent materials — thin-cut marble, onyx, alabaster, and some engineered quartz surfaces. A flexible LED panel placed behind the slab allows light to pass through the material, revealing the natural veining and internal structure in a way that front-lighting simply cannot achieve. The effect is dramatic and immediately differentiates a backlit display from every front-lit competitor booth on the floor.

Color Temperature: Matching Light to Material
Color temperature has a profound effect on how tile and stone surfaces read visually. The wrong color temperature can make a premium material look cheap — and the right one can make a mid-range product look exceptional.
Color Temperature Decision Guide
- 3000K (Warm White): Best for warm-toned materials — beige, cream, gold, terracotta, and wood-look tiles. Creates a residential, inviting atmosphere that suits kitchen and bathroom tile displays.
- 4000K–4500K (Neutral White): The most versatile choice. Works well for grey, white, and mixed-tone collections. Accurate color rendering across the widest range of surface colors. Recommended as the default for most tile booths.
- 5000K (Cool Neutral): Best for ultra-white, concrete-look, and industrial-aesthetic tiles. Creates a clean, architectural look that suits contemporary design brands.
- 6000K (Cool White): Avoid for most tile and stone — makes warm-toned materials look cold and grey, and can make white tiles look clinical rather than premium.
If your collection spans multiple color families, 4000K–4500K is the safest single choice. If you're showing a focused collection in a specific tone, match the color temperature to the material's undertones.
Managing Glare on Polished and Glossy Surfaces
Polished tile and stone are highly reflective. A light source positioned directly overhead creates a mirror-like reflection that obscures the surface pattern and makes the tile look like a light fixture rather than a premium material. Three techniques solve this:
- Angle the light at 30–45° from vertical rather than directly overhead. This creates a specular highlight that adds depth and sheen without creating a full mirror reflection.
- Use multiple lower-wattage lights rather than one high-wattage light. Distributing the light source across several points reduces the intensity of any single reflection.
- Position lights to the side of the display panel rather than directly in front. Side-angled light on polished tile creates a dramatic raking effect that emphasizes the surface's reflective quality without obscuring the pattern.
