How to Choose LED Modules for Trade Show Lightboxes: Aluminum vs. Plastic, Edge-Lit vs. Back-Lit

“Backlit display” and “backlit LED module” are not the same term. A finished fabric graphic can appear illuminated from behind even when the LED bars are installed along the frame edges. The module type is defined by where the LEDs mount and how the optics direct the light.

Edge-lit system

Edge-lit or side-lit bars mount along the inner perimeter of the aluminum frame and project light horizontally across the graphic. This layout is common when the extrusion includes a dedicated side-lighting channel or when the center of the cabinet must remain clear.

Backlit system

Backlit modules mount on a rear panel behind the graphic and face forward. They typically use wider optical distribution and are arranged across the rear surface according to cabinet depth and diffusion requirements.

How to identify the existing frame

Housing material does not replace optical design

Aluminum can improve heat transfer and mechanical rigidity, but housing material alone does not prove that a module will last longer or illuminate the cabinet correctly. Compare thermal design, rated operating conditions, optical lens, mounting method and verified certification together.

Do not substitute only by wattage

A 12W edge-lit bar and a 12W rear-mounted module can draw the same electrical power while producing completely different light distribution. Replacement selection should match:

  • mounting position and physical dimensions;
  • optical lens and throw distance;
  • DC voltage and driver capacity;
  • connector type, pin count and polarity;
  • color-temperature range and control method;
  • certification required for the project.

Examples from the current range

The 12W/18W Plug-In Module is an edge-lit product installed along the frame perimeter. The 13W LED Bar is also edge-lit but uses different dimensions and optics. Rear-mounted products should be selected from the separate LED Backlight Modules collection.

Before production

Test one representative frame using the actual extrusion, graphic, power supply and wiring. Photograph the center, edges and corners at the intended brightness. A small test exposes optical or connector mismatches before they affect a full booth or production batch.
