How to Choose Edge-Lit LED Modules for SEG Fabric Lightboxes

How to Choose LED Modules for SEG Fabric Lightboxes & MODULAP Systems

In an edge-lit SEG fabric lightbox, the LED bars mount along the aluminum-frame perimeter and project light across the graphic. Selecting the correct module therefore begins with the frame geometry—not with wattage or the external size of the finished display.

Confirm that the frame is designed for edge lighting

Inspect the extrusion or technical drawing. An edge-lit frame normally provides a perimeter channel or mounting position that aims the optical lens inward across the fabric. A backlit system instead places modules behind the graphic, facing forward. The two layouts require different optics and spacing.

Specifications that determine compatibility

  • Available channel dimensions: measure the clear width, depth and mounting-hole position.
  • Module length: confirm the bar fits between frame joints, corner hardware and wiring paths.
  • Optical distribution: the lens must project far enough across the internal width without producing an excessively bright edge band.
  • Connector: verify pin count, plug series, polarity and cable clearance inside the profile.
  • DC24V power: calculate the selected modules’ total wattage and follow the product-specific connection limit.

12W/18W plug-in edge-lit module

The 12W/18W Edge-Lit LED Module is installed along the frame perimeter and uses an optical lens to project light across the fabric graphic. It is offered in different power and length configurations, so the exact selected variant must be checked before planning spacing or power.

References to MODULAP or another frame system describe an intended application, not automatic compatibility with every extrusion version. Measure the actual channel and compare it with the product drawing before ordering.

How many modules are required?

There is no universal “one bar per 50cm” rule for every lightbox. Required quantity changes with:

  • internal frame width and depth;
  • single-sided or double-sided construction;
  • lens distribution and module output;
  • fabric density and graphic color;
  • whether bars are installed on two or four sides.

Begin with the manufacturer’s optical layout for the selected model and test a representative frame section using the real graphic. Check center brightness, corner uniformity and visible edge bands before approving production quantity.

Installation and service planning

Keep connectors accessible for replacement, protect cables from sharp extrusion edges and leave adequate space for the power supply and controller where applicable. If a single-color system does not require a controller, do not add one merely because another product family uses it.
