Flicker-free is a term used to describe LED lighting that produces a stable, consistent light output without rapid fluctuations in brightness. All LED lights flicker to some degree — the question is whether that flicker is fast enough and small enough to be invisible to the human eye and to cameras.
At trade shows, flicker matters for two reasons: it affects how people feel in your booth, and it affects how your booth looks on camera.
What Causes LED Flicker?
LED lights are powered by alternating current (AC), which cycles at 50Hz in Europe and 60Hz in North America. This means the power supply switches direction 100 or 120 times per second. Without proper driver circuitry, this causes the LED to dim and brighten at the same frequency — producing flicker.
High-quality LED drivers smooth out this fluctuation, producing a stable DC current to the LED chips. Low-quality drivers don't, resulting in visible or near-visible flicker.
Two Types of Flicker
Visible flicker
Flicker above approximately 3–70Hz that the human eye can detect directly. This appears as a strobing or pulsing effect. It's rare in modern LEDs but still occurs in very low-quality fixtures.
Invisible flicker (stroboscopic effect)
Flicker above 70Hz that the human eye cannot consciously detect but that still causes physiological effects: eye strain, headaches, and fatigue after prolonged exposure. Studies have shown that flicker at 100–120Hz — exactly the frequency of unfiltered AC-powered LEDs — causes measurable discomfort even when people can't see it directly.
At a trade show, visitors spend 5–30 minutes in your booth. Invisible flicker from low-quality lights can make them feel subtly uncomfortable without knowing why — and leave sooner.
Flicker and Cameras
This is where flicker becomes a visible, measurable problem. Camera sensors capture light at a fixed frame rate (typically 24, 30, or 60 frames per second). When the camera's frame rate doesn't align with the light's flicker frequency, the result is banding — dark horizontal bars that scroll through video footage.
At trade shows, cameras are everywhere: smartphones, professional cameras, live-stream setups, and press photographers. If your booth lighting causes banding in video, any footage of your booth — including footage you didn't take — will look unprofessional.
Flicker-free LED fixtures eliminate this problem entirely. The stable light output produces clean, band-free footage at any camera frame rate.
How to Identify Flicker-Free Fixtures
There are two ways to check:
Check the spec sheet
Look for "flicker-free" or "flicker-free certified" in the product specifications. Some manufacturers also list the Percent Flicker (PF) and Flicker Index (FI) — lower numbers are better. A PF below 5% and FI below 0.01 is considered flicker-free for practical purposes.
Test with your smartphone camera
Open your phone's camera app and point it at the light. Switch to slow-motion video mode (120fps or 240fps). If you see banding or pulsing in the footage, the light is flickering. If the image is stable, the light is effectively flicker-free at normal camera frame rates.
Flicker-Free vs. Dimmable: Are They Related?
Dimming introduces a separate source of flicker. Many LED dimmers work by rapidly switching the light on and off (PWM dimming) at a frequency that controls perceived brightness. Low-quality PWM dimmers flicker at frequencies that are visible or near-visible, especially at low brightness levels.
For trade show use, most exhibitors don't dim their lights — they run them at full brightness. If you do need dimming, look for fixtures with high-frequency PWM dimming (above 1,000Hz) or analog dimming, which avoids the flicker issue entirely.
Note: most trade show display arm lights are non-dimmable by design. This is actually an advantage — non-dimmable fixtures with quality drivers produce the most stable, flicker-free output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can flicker cause health problems?
Research indicates that flicker at certain frequencies can trigger migraines in sensitive individuals and cause eye strain and headaches in the general population after prolonged exposure. For a trade show booth where staff spend 8–10 hours per day under the lights, flicker-free certification is worth prioritizing for staff wellbeing as well as visitor experience.
Are all LED lights flicker-free?
No. Flicker-free performance depends on the quality of the LED driver. Cheap LED fixtures often use low-quality drivers that produce significant flicker. Always look for explicit flicker-free certification rather than assuming all LEDs are flicker-free.

My booth video footage has banding. Is it definitely the lights?
Banding in video can also be caused by camera settings (incorrect shutter speed for the local AC frequency) or by mixing light sources with different flicker frequencies. Test by filming under only your booth lights with no other light sources. If banding disappears, the issue is a different light source. If it persists, your booth lights are the cause.
