What Is a Daisy-Chain LED Light for Trade Shows? How It Works and When to Use It

A daisy-chain LED light is a fixture that can be electrically connected in series with other identical fixtures, so that multiple lights share a single power outlet. Instead of running a separate cable from each light to a power outlet, you plug the first light into the outlet, then connect the second light to the first, the third to the second, and so on — forming a chain.

For trade show exhibitors, daisy-chaining solves one of the most common practical problems on the show floor: not enough power outlets.

How Daisy-Chaining Works

Each daisy-chain-capable fixture has two power connectors: an input connector (power in) and an output connector (power out). The input connects to the outlet or the previous fixture in the chain. The output connects to the next fixture in the chain.

The power flows through each fixture in sequence. All fixtures in the chain operate simultaneously from a single outlet connection.

The connector type used for daisy-chaining varies by manufacturer. Common types include IEC C7/C8 (figure-8 or Mickey Mouse connectors), proprietary snap connectors, and standard IEC C13/C14 connectors. Make sure all fixtures in a chain use the same connector standard — you cannot mix connector types.

How Many Lights Can You Daisy-Chain?

The maximum chain length is determined by the total power draw of all fixtures in the chain and the capacity of the outlet and cable.

Standard calculation:

  • Standard US outlet: 15A at 120V = 1,800W maximum (use 80% = 1,440W safe limit)
  • Standard EU outlet: 16A at 230V = 3,680W maximum (use 80% = 2,944W safe limit)
  • 16W fixture: 1,440W ÷ 16W = up to 90 fixtures theoretically (US outlet)

In practice, manufacturers specify a maximum chain length based on cable gauge and connector ratings — typically 10 to 20 fixtures per chain for standard trade show arm lights. Always follow the manufacturer's specified maximum, not the theoretical electrical limit.

For a clean, professional booth setup with minimal visible cabling, daisy-chaining is the better option when your fixtures support it. For maximum flexibility and fault tolerance, a power strip gives each fixture an independent connection.

When Daisy-Chaining Makes the Most Sense

  • Limited outlet count — If your booth allocation is one outlet for a 10×10 space, daisy-chaining lets you run 3–4 lights from that single outlet.
  • Long runs of lights — For a 10×20 or larger booth with lights spaced along a top rail, daisy-chaining eliminates the need to run individual cables back to a central power strip.
  • Rental fleets — Rental companies setting up multiple booths simultaneously benefit from the speed and simplicity of daisy-chain connections.

Common Daisy-Chain Mistakes

  • Exceeding the manufacturer's maximum chain length — Overloading a chain causes voltage drop at the end of the chain, resulting in dimmer lights and potential connector damage.
  • Mixing fixtures from different manufacturers — Even if the connectors look the same, internal wiring standards may differ. Only daisy-chain fixtures from the same product line.
  • Using extension cords with insufficient gauge — If you extend the chain with an extension cord, use a cord rated for the total load of the chain. Undersized extension cords cause voltage drop and heat buildup.
  • Assuming all arm lights support daisy-chaining — Many trade show arm lights are standalone units. Check the spec sheet before assuming daisy-chain capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I daisy-chain lights from different brands?

Not recommended. Even if the physical connectors are compatible, the internal wiring and voltage specifications may differ between manufacturers. Mixing brands in a daisy chain can cause flickering, reduced lifespan, or connector damage.

What happens if one light in a daisy chain fails?

It depends on how the chain is wired. In a series circuit, one failure breaks the entire chain. In a parallel daisy chain (the more common design for LED fixtures), each fixture operates independently — one failure doesn't affect the others. Check your fixture's wiring diagram to confirm.

Does daisy-chaining affect brightness?

It shouldn't, if the chain is within the manufacturer's specified maximum length. Beyond the maximum, voltage drop at the end of the chain can reduce brightness in the last few fixtures.

My booth only has one outlet. How many lights can I run?

With daisy-chain-capable 16W fixtures on a standard 15A US outlet (1,440W safe limit): up to 10 fixtures within the manufacturer's recommended chain length. With a power strip on the same outlet: same total wattage limit, but each fixture connects independently.
