Linkable vs Standard Booth Lights: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

When you're shopping for trade show booth lights, you'll notice some are described as "linkable" or "daisy chain" and others are just… regular lights. What's the difference, and does it matter for your setup?

It might matter more than you think — especially if you've ever dealt with a tangle of extension cords on setup day.

What Are Standard Booth Lights?

Standard booth lights have a single power cord that plugs directly into a wall outlet or power strip. Each light needs its own connection to a power source. Simple, reliable, and perfectly fine for small setups with one or two lights.

What Are Linkable Booth Lights?

Linkable booth lights have a pass-through connector — usually a 3-pin plug — that lets you connect multiple lights in a chain. The first light plugs into the wall. The second light plugs into the first. The third plugs into the second. And so on.

The result: multiple lights running from a single wall outlet, with one clean cable run instead of multiple separate cords going back to a power strip.

Why Does This Matter at Trade Shows?

A few reasons:

Power outlet availability. Most trade show venues provide a limited number of outlets per booth — often just one or two. If you have six lights and only one outlet, standard lights require a power strip with six connections and six separate cables running across your booth. Linkable lights require one outlet and one cable run, with short linking cables between each light.

Cable management. Messy cables look unprofessional and create tripping hazards. Linkable systems dramatically reduce the number of cables you need to manage. Your booth looks cleaner, setup is faster, and there's less to go wrong.

Power limits. Some venues have strict limits on total power draw per booth. Linkable systems don't reduce power consumption — each light still draws the same wattage — but they make it easier to manage your total draw from a single circuit.

How Many Lights Can You Link?

It depends on the system. Our linkable LED arm lights support daisy chains of up to 10 lights from a single outlet. In practice, most exhibitors link 3-6 lights per chain, which covers the majority of booth sizes.

The limiting factor is total wattage. If each light is 21W and you're linking 10 of them, that's 210W on one circuit. Check your venue's circuit capacity before building a long chain.

Do You Need Linkable Lights?

If you're running one or two lights, probably not. Standard lights are simpler and slightly cheaper.

If you're running three or more lights, linkable is almost always worth it. The cable management benefit alone makes setup and teardown significantly faster and less stressful.

If you exhibit at multiple shows with different booth sizes, linkable lights give you flexibility — you can run a short chain for a small booth and a longer chain for a larger one, all with the same lights.

One Thing to Check

Make sure the linkable lights you buy are certified — UL, ETL, CE, or UKCA depending on where you exhibit. Linkable systems involve more electrical connections than standard lights, so certification is especially important.
