One Size Does Not Fit All
The most common lighting mistake exhibitors make is buying the same lights regardless of booth size. A setup that works perfectly in a 10×10 will leave a 20×20 island looking dim and uneven. And over-lighting a small booth wastes money and can actually make your display look harsh.
This guide gives you the exact specifications — wattage, quantity, and configuration — for the three most common booth sizes.
10×10 Booth: The Standard Setup
A 10×10 booth is the most common format at US trade shows. You have roughly 100 square feet to illuminate, typically with a back wall and a table or product display in front.
Recommended configuration:
- Quantity: 2 arm lights
- Wattage: 21W–25W each
- Total output: 4200–5000lm
- Mounting: Rear top corners of the back wall frame, beams crossed toward center
- Power: Daisy-chain both from one outlet
Two 25W lights at 3250lm each give you 6500lm total — more than enough for a 10×10 with a standard 8–10ft ceiling. If your booth has a particularly dark back wall color or heavy fabric, go with the higher lumen option.

10×20 Booth: Double the Zone, Double the Lights
A 10×20 inline booth is essentially two 10×10 zones side by side. The key mistake here is treating it as one large space and placing all lights in the center — this creates bright spots in the middle and dark corners at both ends.
Recommended configuration:
- Quantity: 4 arm lights (2 per zone)
- Wattage: 25W–50W each depending on ceiling height
- Total output: 10,000–22,000lm
- Mounting: Rear corners of each 10×10 zone, crossed beams
- Power: One linkable chain per zone, or all 4 on one chain if within spec
If your 10×20 has a high ceiling (12ft+) or a particularly large back wall graphic, step up to 50W lights for each zone. The extra output ensures your graphics stay vivid even under bright venue ambient lighting.

20×20 Island Booth: The Full Perimeter Approach
Island booths are the most demanding lighting challenge at any trade show. Visitors approach from all four sides, which means every side needs to be lit — and the interior needs to feel open and inviting, not like a cave.
Recommended configuration:
- Quantity: 8–12 arm lights
- Wattage: 50W each
- Total output: 44,000–66,000lm
- Mounting: 2–3 lights per side on the outer perimeter frame, angled inward at 30°
- Interior: Additional lights on any internal product towers or columns
- Power: 2 daisy-chain runs of 6 lights each from 2 power drops
The perimeter-inward approach is critical for island booths. Lights aimed outward illuminate the aisle but leave your products in shadow. Lights aimed inward at 30° create a bright interior that draws visitors in from every direction.
Ceiling Height Adjustment
Standard venue ceiling heights vary significantly. Adjust your wattage selection based on how high your lights will be mounted:

The CRI Factor: Don't Ignore It
Regardless of booth size, always choose arm lights with CRI90 or higher. CRI (Color Rendering Index) determines how accurately your products' colors appear under the light. A CRI80 light makes reds look orange and blues look grey — which is a serious problem if you're displaying colored products, fabrics, or cosmetics.
