Lumen output is the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source, measured in lumens (lm). It is the most direct measure of how much light a fixture produces. A fixture with 1,600 lumens produces more light than one with 800 lumens, all else being equal.

For trade show lighting, lumen output contributes to brightness, but fixture placement, beam distribution, mounting height and ambient light also affect the result. But lumens alone don't tell the whole story — how those lumens are distributed across your booth surface matters just as much as the total number.

Lumens vs. Watts: Why Wattage Is Not a Brightness Measure

Wattage measures power consumption, not light output. This was a useful shorthand for incandescent bulbs, where wattage and brightness were closely correlated. For LED fixtures, the relationship is much less predictable.

A high-quality 16W LED fixture can produce 1,600 lumens. A low-quality 25W LED fixture might produce only 1,200 lumens. The 16W fixture is both more efficient and brighter despite using less power.

Always compare fixtures by lumen output, not wattage. Wattage is only relevant for calculating power consumption and staying within venue electrical limits.

Luminous Efficacy: The Efficiency Measure

Luminous efficacy is the ratio of lumen output to power consumption, measured in lumens per watt (lm/W). It tells you how efficiently a fixture converts electricity into visible light.

How Many Lumens Do You Need for a Trade Show Booth?

The answer depends on the surface area you're illuminating and the target illuminance level. For a standard trade show backwall graphic, the target is 500–800 lux (lumens per square meter).

For a 10×10 ft (3×3m) booth with a 3m wide × 2.4m tall backwall (7.2 m²):

  • Target illuminance: 600 lux (midpoint of 500–800 range)
  • Total lumens needed: 600 lux × 7.2 m² = 4,320 lumens
  • With 3 × 1,600 lumen fixtures: 4,800 lumens total — sufficient, with some margin

In practice, not all lumens from a fixture reach the target surface — some spill beyond the graphic edges. The 3-light setup for a 10×10 booth is a well-established standard that accounts for this real-world efficiency loss.

Lumen Depreciation: Why Brightness Decreases Over Time

LED fixtures don't fail suddenly like incandescent bulbs — they gradually dim over time. This is called lumen depreciation. The industry standard measure is L70: the point at which lumen output has dropped to 70% of the original value.

A fixture rated at 50,000 hours L70 will still produce 70% of its original brightness after 50,000 hours of operation. For a trade show exhibitor using lights 300 hours per year, that's 166 years — lumen depreciation is not a practical concern for trade show use.

Where lumen depreciation matters is in permanent installations running 8–12 hours per day. At that usage rate, 50,000 hours L70 represents approximately 11–17 years of service.

Initial Lumens vs. Maintained Lumens

Some manufacturers publish initial lumen output (measured when the fixture is new) rather than maintained lumen output (measured after a burn-in period). Initial lumens are always higher. For accurate comparison between fixtures, look for maintained lumen output measured after 100 hours of operation.

If a manufacturer only publishes initial lumens, apply a 5–10% reduction to estimate maintained output.
