If you're preparing for your first trade show, you've probably got a long list of things to figure out. Booth design, product display, marketing materials, staffing… and somewhere near the bottom of that list, lighting.
Move it to the top. Seriously.
Here's what a trade show booth light actually is, why it matters more than most first-timers expect, and how to choose the right one without overcomplicating it.
What Is a Trade Show Booth Light?
A trade show booth light is a portable, clamp-on or clip-on light specifically designed for use in exhibition booths and display stands. Unlike fixed ceiling lights or floor lamps, booth lights are built to:
- Attach quickly to standard booth frames without tools
- Be aimed precisely at specific products or display elements
- Pack down small enough to travel with your booth
- Meet the electrical safety certification requirements of trade show venues
The most common type is the LED arm light — a spotlight on an adjustable arm that clamps onto your booth frame and can be aimed in any direction. Think of it as a professional-grade desk lamp designed specifically for exhibition use.
Why Can't I Just Use Regular Lights?
A few reasons.
First, most trade show venues require UL or ETL certified electrical equipment. Regular household lamps often don't carry these certifications and can be confiscated by show management on setup day.
Second, regular lights aren't designed for booth frames. They don't clamp on, they're not adjustable, and they're not built to be packed and unpacked repeatedly without breaking.
Third — and most importantly — regular lights aren't optimized for product display. Trade show booth lights are designed with high CRI (color accuracy) and focused beam angles specifically to make products look their best.
The Main Types of Trade Show Booth Lights
LED Arm Lights (Most Popular)
These are what most exhibitors use. They clamp onto your booth frame, the arm adjusts to any angle, and you aim the light at whatever you want to highlight. Available in different wattages — 16W for small displays, 25W for standard 10x10 booths, 50W for larger stands.
Linkable LED Systems
Same as arm lights, but with a daisy-chain connector that lets you run multiple lights from a single power outlet. If your venue has limited outlets (most do), this is a game-changer. Some systems let you link up to 10 lights from one plug.
LED Strip Lights
Flexible strips that run along shelving edges or display frames. They add accent lighting and give your booth a premium retail feel. Not a replacement for arm lights — more of an addition.
Lightbox Modules
If your booth has a backlit fabric display, you need these inside the frame to make the graphic glow evenly. Without them, your lightbox looks dark and flat.
How Many Lights Do I Need?
For a standard 10x10 booth, most exhibitors use 2-3 LED arm lights. One aimed at your hero product, one at your display graphics, and one for general fill light.
For larger booths, scale up accordingly. A 10x20 booth typically needs 4-6 lights. A 20x20 might need 8-10.
When in doubt, bring one more than you think you need. You can always not use it. You can't conjure an extra light on setup day.
What Should I Look for When Buying?
Three things:
- CRI 90 or higher — So your products look accurate and vibrant.
- UL or ETL listed — So you're not turned away at the venue.
- Adjustable arm and head — So you can aim the light exactly where you need it.
Everything else — wattage, color temperature, linkability — depends on your specific booth and products.
Our LED booth arm lights cover all three requirements as standard. If you're not sure which model is right for your booth size, feel free to reach out — we help exhibitors figure this out every day.
