A pop-up display is the most common booth format at trade shows worldwide — a collapsible frame that expands to create a curved or straight backwall, typically covered with a printed graphic panel or fabric. Pop-up displays are popular because they're lightweight, fast to set up, and affordable. But they have a specific lighting challenge: the curved or angled frame makes standard arm light positioning less intuitive than on a flat modular booth.

Types of Pop-Up Displays and Their Lighting Implications
Curved pop-up display
The most common format. The frame curves outward at the sides, creating a concave graphic surface when viewed from the front. The curve means the side panels are angled away from the viewer — and away from lights mounted at the top center. Side panels need their own light sources or they'll appear dimmer than the center panel.
Straight pop-up display
A flat backwall format. Easier to light evenly than a curved display because all panels are in the same plane. Standard arm light positioning (evenly spaced across the top rail) works well.
Fabric pop-up display (tension fabric)
Uses a stretch fabric graphic instead of rigid panels. Fabric absorbs more light than rigid panels — plan for 20–30% more light output compared to a rigid graphic of the same size. Fabric also diffuses light more evenly, which reduces hot spots.
Where to Mount Arm Lights on a Pop-Up Display
Pop-up displays have a top horizontal bar that runs across the full width of the display. This is the primary mounting point for arm lights. Most pop-up display top bars are compatible with standard clamp mount arm lights.
Standard mounting positions for a 10 ft (3m) pop-up display:
- 2 lights: Position at 25% and 75% of the display width (approximately 0.75m and 2.25m from one end)
- 3 lights: Position at 17%, 50%, and 83% of the display width (approximately 0.5m, 1.5m, and 2.5m from one end)
- 4 lights: Position at 12.5%, 37.5%, 62.5%, and 87.5% of the display width
For curved displays, add one additional light at each end of the top bar, angled inward to illuminate the curved side panels.
Arm Length for Pop-Up Displays
Pop-up display frames are typically shallower than modular booth frames — the top bar sits close to the graphic surface. Standard 400mm arm length works for most pop-up displays. If the top bar is very close to the graphic (less than 200mm), a 500mm arm may be needed to position the light head far enough from the surface to avoid a hot spot at the top of the graphic.
Test this before the show: mount one light and check for hot spots at the top of the graphic. If you see a bright spot directly below the light head, increase the arm length or angle the light head further forward.

Common Pop-Up Display Lighting Mistakes
- Mounting all lights at the center of a curved display — The center panels get bright; the curved side panels stay dim. Always add lights at the ends of the top bar for curved displays.
- Using too short an arm on a shallow frame — Creates a hot spot at the top of the graphic directly below the light head. Use a longer arm or angle the light head further forward.
- Not accounting for fabric absorption — Fabric graphics need more light than rigid panels. If you're switching from a rigid graphic to a fabric display, add one extra light.
- Forgetting to check clamp compatibility — Pop-up display top bars vary in diameter and profile. Check that your clamp opens wide enough for your specific display's top bar before ordering.
- Pointing lights at eye level — Pop-up displays are often lower than modular booth frames. If the top bar is at eye level, lights mounted on it will shine directly into visitors' eyes. Angle lights steeply downward or use a longer arm to position the light head above eye level.
Lighting a Pop-Up Display with a Counter or Table
Many pop-up display setups include a counter or table in front of the backwall. If you have products on the counter, the backwall arm lights won't illuminate the counter surface effectively — they're aimed at the backwall, not downward at the counter.
Options for counter lighting:
- Add a small clamp-on spotlight to the counter edge, aimed at the product display
- Use under-shelf LED strips if the counter has a shelf structure
- Position one backwall arm light at a steeper downward angle to partially illuminate the counter surface

Most standard clamps accommodate both round and square profiles within their opening range. Check the clamp opening size against your tube diameter. Most pop-up display tubes are 20–30mm diameter — within the range of standard clamps.
I have a curved pop-up display and the side panels always look dim. How do I fix this?
Add one light at each end of the top bar, angled inward at approximately 30–45° toward the curved side panel. This directly illuminates the angled surface that center-mounted lights can't reach effectively.
