Uneven lighting is one of the most common trade show booth problems — and one of the easiest to fix once you know what's causing it. Here are the 7 most common causes and exactly how to solve each one.
Cause #1: Too Few Lights
Symptoms: Bright center, dark edges; one side of the booth noticeably dimmer than the other.
Solution: Add a third light. Most 10×10 booths need at least 2–3 lights for even coverage. Two lights positioned at the far left and right edges of your display will cover the center but leave the sides dim. A third light in the center fills the gap.
Rule of thumb: One light per 3–4 linear feet of display width.
Cause #2: Lights Aimed Straight Down (0° Angle)
Symptoms: Bright spots directly below each light, dark areas between lights, harsh shadows on vertical displays.
Solution: Angle your lights at 30°–45° from vertical, aimed toward the center of your display. This spreads the light more evenly across the panel surface and reduces hot spots.
For banner stands and display panels, position the light above and slightly in front of the panel, angled back toward it. This creates even wash lighting across the entire surface.
Cause #3: Mismatched Color Temperatures
Symptoms: Some areas look warm/yellow, others look cool/blue; products look different colors depending on where customers stand.
Solution: Use lights with identical color temperatures across your entire booth. If your arm lights are 3000K and your venue's overhead lighting is 5000K, the contrast will make your booth look inconsistent.
You can't control venue lighting, but you can ensure all your own lights match. Stick to one color temperature — 3500K–4000K is the most versatile choice for trade shows.
Cause #4: Lights Positioned Too High
Symptoms: Top of display is bright, bottom is dim; products on lower shelves or tables are poorly lit.
Solution: Lower your light mounting position or increase the downward angle. For a standard 8-foot display panel, mounting lights at 7–7.5 feet and angling them at 30°–45° downward provides the best coverage from top to bottom.
If you have products on a table in front of your display, add a separate low-mounted light aimed at the table surface — your overhead display lights won't reach it effectively.
Cause #5: Beam Angle Too Narrow
Symptoms: Tight bright circles on the display with dark areas between them; spotlight effect rather than even wash.
Solution: Switch to lights with a wider beam angle (45°–60°) or add more lights. Narrow beam lights (15°–25°) are great for accent lighting on specific products but create uneven coverage when used as primary booth lighting.
For display panels and banner stands, a 30°–45° beam angle provides the best balance of coverage and focus.
Cause #6: Lights Placed Too Close Together
Symptoms: Bright center with overlapping light pools, dark edges on both sides of the display.
Solution: Space your lights evenly across the full width of your display. For a 10-foot wide booth with 3 lights, position them at approximately 2.5 feet, 5 feet, and 7.5 feet from the left edge — not clustered in the center.
Cause #7: Mixing LED and Non-LED Light Sources
Symptoms: Color inconsistency across the booth; some areas look green-tinted or yellow-tinted compared to others.
Solution: Use only LED lights throughout your booth. Mixing LED with fluorescent or halogen creates color rendering inconsistencies that are impossible to fully correct with positioning alone.
If your venue has fluorescent overhead lighting that's affecting your booth, position your LED arm lights to overpower it on your key display surfaces. Higher-lumen LEDs (2000+ lumens) can effectively neutralize the impact of ambient fluorescent light.
