Why Wattage Alone Cannot Select a Lightbox LED Module

A 7W, 12W, 13W or 20W label tells you how much electrical power a lightbox module uses. It does not tell you where the module mounts, how far the optic projects light, or whether the bar fits the aluminum profile.

Identify the lightbox architecture first

  • Edge-lit or side-lit: bars mount along the frame perimeter and project light across the graphic.
  • Backlit: modules mount behind the graphic and face forward toward the fabric.

These structures are not interchangeable. A higher-wattage bar cannot correct an optical layout designed for a different mounting position.

Five specifications to compare before wattage

  1. Mounting position: perimeter channel or rear panel.
  2. Optical lens: beam distribution must match the throw distance and cabinet geometry.
  3. Physical length: confirm the bar and mounting holes fit the actual extrusion.
  4. Connector: verify pin count, polarity and compatibility with the wiring harness.
  5. Power system: confirm DC voltage, driver capacity and the product-specific linked quantity.

How the wattage families differ

Compact 7W edge-lit modules suit layouts where a shorter bar and lower output match the frame. The best-selling 12W/18W plug-in module is also an edge-lit product: it installs along the frame and uses its optical lens to project light across the fabric. The 13W bar is another edge-lit format with different length, output and optical characteristics. A 20W rigid bar provides higher output but still must be matched to the frame geometry.

Do not assume a module is backlit because it illuminates the back of a fabric graphic. “Backlit display” describes the visible result; edge-lit and backlit describe where the LEDs are installed and how they project light.

Use a test section before production

For a new frame, assemble a representative section using the real extrusion, fabric, depth, power supply and connector. Check the center, edges and corners before approving a full production quantity. Dark centers usually indicate insufficient optical reach; bright bands near the frame can indicate spacing or aiming problems.
