Why Light Placement Matters More Than Wattage
Most exhibitors obsess over which light to buy. The ones who consistently attract more visitors obsess over where to put it. A 50W arm light aimed at the wrong angle will underperform a 25W light positioned correctly every single time.
This guide covers exactly where to position exhibition arm lights in three common booth configurations — so you stop guessing and start drawing attention.
The Golden Rule: Light the Product, Not the Space
Your goal is to create contrast — bright products against a relatively darker background. This is what makes visitors' eyes snap to your display from across the aisle. If your entire booth is uniformly lit, nothing stands out.
Position your arm lights to create focused pools of light on your key products or graphics, not to flood the entire booth with even illumination.
10×10 Booth: The 2-Light Setup
A standard 10×10 booth needs a minimum of two arm lights to avoid dead zones and uneven shadows.
- Position 1 — Left rear corner: Aim at a 30–45° downward angle toward the center-right of your display. This covers your primary product zone.
- Position 2 — Right rear corner: Aim toward the center-left, crossing the beam of the first light. The overlap in the center creates a bright focal point with no harsh shadows.
For a 10×10 with a back wall graphic, mount both lights at the top of the back wall frame and angle them slightly forward toward the aisle rather than straight down. This illuminates the graphic and spills light onto products on the table in front.

10×20 Booth: The 4-Light Setup
A 10×20 booth is essentially two 10×10 zones. Treat them independently, then connect them.
- Zone A (left half): Two lights in the rear corners, crossed beams as above.

- Center connection: If you have a product display or demo station in the center, add a fifth light aimed directly down at it from the top rail.

- Perimeter lighting: Mount arm lights on all four outer edges of the top frame, angled inward at 30°. This creates a bright perimeter that draws attention from every aisle.
- Interior lighting: Add downlights or arm lights on any interior columns or product towers, aimed at key display surfaces.
- Avoid center-only lighting: A single overhead light in the center of an island booth creates a cave effect — bright in the middle, dark at the edges where visitors enter.
Common Placement Mistakes to Avoid
- Aiming straight down: Straight-down light creates harsh shadows under products and on faces. Always angle at 30–45° from vertical.
- Lighting the ceiling or back wall only: Indirect light looks elegant in hotels. At trade shows, it makes your products disappear.
- Placing lights too close together: Two lights 6 inches apart create one bright spot and leave the rest of the booth dark. Spread them to the outer edges.
- Ignoring the aisle view: Stand in the aisle and look at your booth before the show opens. If your products don't immediately catch your eye, reposition.
Beam Angle and Rotation: Use the Full Range
