An M8 slider looks simple: a small aluminum block with a threaded hole. The installation becomes less simple when the block reaches the show floor and will not enter the light box channel.
This happens because “M8” describes the thread, not the extrusion. Two sliders can both use an M8 bolt and still have different widths, thicknesses and channel requirements.
What the slider actually does
The sliding block sits inside a compatible aluminum channel and provides a movable threaded fixing point. Once it is in the channel, the installer positions it, aligns the light bracket and tightens the M8 bolt.
Depending on the supplier, the same part may be called an M8 sliding nut for light box, aluminum track slider, channel runner, extrusion slider or sliding fixture base with M8 thread. Those names describe the function. The drawing determines the fit.
The four dimensions that matter
- Slot mouth width: the opening at the face of the extrusion.
- Internal channel width: the space in which the slider sits.
- Channel depth: the clearance behind the slot.
- Slider thickness: must fit the cavity while providing enough material around the thread.
Also confirm the bolt length. If it is too short, thread engagement may be insufficient. If it is too long, it may bottom out against the channel before the bracket is secure.
M8 slider versus T-slot clip
An M8 slider normally stays inside the channel and receives a bolt. A T-slot clip may hook or slide into the profile and create a direct mounting interface. The best choice depends on whether the fixture needs frequent repositioning, how the load is oriented and whether access to the end of the extrusion is available.
If the slider must be inserted from the end, remember to install it before the frame is closed with end caps. Some profiles accept drop-in hardware; others do not.
When a dual-M8 bracket helps
A long display arm applies leverage to its fixing point. With a single bolt, some bracket designs can rotate if the joint is not keyed or supported. A dual-M8 bracket uses two fixing points to resist that movement and keep the light aligned.

Installation sequence used by booth technicians
- Identify the exact extrusion family and mounting channel.
- Compare the channel drawing with the slider dimensions.
- Insert the slider or clip before closing inaccessible frame ends.
- Position the slider without fully tightening it.
- Attach the bracket and check arm clearance.
- Aim the light, then tighten the hardware to the specified level.
- Route the cable so it does not pull on the arm or interfere with the graphic.
Common mistakes
Choosing from the outside width. External profile size does not reveal the internal channel.
Assuming all SEG frames use the same slot. SEG describes the silicone-edge graphic system, not one extrusion standard.
Mixing metric threads. An M8 bolt does not belong in a different thread even when it appears close.
Ignoring load direction. A part that works on a horizontal top rail may behave differently on a vertical post.
Forgetting cable clearance. The mechanical mount can fit while leaving no room for a connector or safe cable bend.
Hardware for repeat exhibition builds
Rental companies benefit from keeping sliders and brackets paired by profile family. Store each set with a cross-section drawing and the correct bolt length. That small amount of labeling prevents mixed hardware during a rushed installation.
