Match the mount to the frame profile
Use a C-clamp for a compatible rigid edge or tube within its opening range, a truss clamp for a compatible round truss chord, a square tube light clamp for rectangular crossbars, and a panel or T-slot adapter when the frame is designed around a wall panel or extrusion channel.
Measure the actual frame and check the light-side mounting connection before ordering. Profile size, contact shape and the complete assembly’s permitted load must all match; a booth rendering cannot establish compatibility.
1. Heavy duty C-clamp
A C-clamp offers a removable mounting point on a compatible rigid edge. A hand screw closes the clamp against the mounting surface. It works well when the booth builder needs a removable attachment and the frame offers a solid edge.
Check three details: maximum opening, contact-pad position and clearance behind the screw. A 50mm profile may fit the stated opening but still leave no room to turn the handle. If the structure is painted or anodized, use appropriate contact protection and avoid overtightening.
For compatible booth frames up to 55mm deep, review the heavy duty aluminum C-clamp.
2. Truss clamp and stage light clamp
Truss clamps are shaped to engage a round tube. They are common in stage lighting, but exhibition truss varies in diameter and load rating. The phrase “stage light clamp” describes the application, not a guaranteed fit.
Confirm the tube diameter and make sure the clamp is being used within the fixture and structure manufacturer’s instructions. A clamp designed around a round tube should not be forced onto a square extrusion.
3. Square tube and crossbar clamps
Portable displays often use rectangular top rails or square crossbars. A clamp shaped for flat faces provides more predictable contact than a round-tube truss clamp. Measure both width and depth; a rail described as 30mm may not be square.
Our adjustable square tube light clamp has a recommended clamping dimension of up to 31mm. Identify that dimension on the product drawing; it does not mean every side of a 31mm profile will fit. Check width, depth, contact shape and clearance separately.
4. Booth wall and panel clamps
A trade show booth wall clamp sits at the top of a compatible panel or wall frame. This is useful when the light needs to wash the graphic from above. The clamp must bear on a structural edge, not on loose fabric or thin decorative trim.
Panel thickness is only part of the decision. Check whether the clamp pad will land on aluminum, timber or the graphic surface. If the wall system has a purpose-built slot, a slider or clip is usually cleaner than external clamping.
5. T-slot clips and Octanorm-style profiles
T-slot hardware slides into a channel and creates a fixing point without wrapping a clamp around the outside of the frame. This is useful for modular systems, but profile families differ. “Octanorm-style” is not a dimension.
Ask for the slot mouth, internal width and internal depth. Then compare those figures with the aluminum T-slot mounting clip or the required slider drawing.
A simple site checklist
- Photograph the frame from the front and from the end.
- Measure width, depth, diameter or panel thickness.
- Measure the T-slot if one is present.
- Check space for the screw handle and cable bend.
- Check the light-side bolt or fixing interface, the light’s weight, arm reach and load direction against the instructions for the complete assembly.
- Confirm permitted working load and any secondary restraint required by the fixture manufacturer or venue. An opening size is not a load rating.
- Test one complete assembly for fit and movement before packing the full booth. This fit check does not establish a load rating.
Why “universal clamp” needs a qualification
A universal booth light clamp may cover several common profiles, but it still has limits. The word “universal” should be read as “adjustable within the stated range.” It does not mean suitable for every truss, wall panel or light box.
For a rental inventory, record the profile and light model beside each approved clamp or adapter. Label the parts and keep one tested sample assembly for each combination.
Where to find the hardware
Compare C-clamps, square-tube clamps, panel clips, banner adapters and sliders on our booth light clamps and mounting hardware page. The complete product range is in Trade Show Light Mounting Systems.
If you are unsure, send a dimensioned profile photo before ordering. The most useful image shows the cross-section and a ruler—not only the outside of the booth.
Reference example: Doughty Half Coupler specification. Its diameter range and working-load rating belong to that specific part, not to other clamps.
